A One-Day Road Trip from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca

A Journey Along Salento’s Adriatic Coast

The coastal road connecting Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca passes through some of Puglia’s most spectacular scenery, with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, picturesque villages and breathtaking viewpoints.

First Stop: Otranto

Start early in the morning with a walk through Otranto’s historic centre. Visit the Aragonese Castle, the Cathedral with its famous mosaic floor, and wander through the charming old streets before enjoying a coffee along the seafront.

Second Stop: Bauxite Quarry

Just a few minutes from the town centre lies one of Salento’s most photographed locations. The striking contrast between the red earth, the emerald-green lake and the blue sky makes this place truly unique.

Third Stop: Porto Badisco

A small bay with crystal-clear waters, perfect for a refreshing swim or a relaxing break. If you enjoy snorkelling, don’t forget to bring your mask and fins.

Fourth Stop: Santa Cesarea Terme

Continue south to Santa Cesarea Terme, famous for its Moorish-style villas and historic thermal baths overlooking the sea. It’s the perfect place for a scenic stroll.

Fifth Stop: Ponte Ciolo

One of the most spectacular viewpoints along the Adriatic coast. The bridge overlooks a dramatic inlet and offers incredible views. The more adventurous can dive from the cliffs, but the scenery alone is well worth the visit.

Final Stop: Santa Maria di Leuca

End your day where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas are said to meet. Walk along the seafront, visit the Sanctuary and the lighthouse—one of the tallest in Italy—and enjoy a sunset you’ll never forget.

Between Porto Badisco and Santa Cesarea Terme you’ll find several small seaside restaurants serving excellent fresh seafood. Alternatively, head to Tricase Porto for another fantastic dining experience.
